DESTROYED BY THE TSUNAMI 2700 KM / DAY 029 / APRIL 14, 2011 - 06:24 / DICHATO, CHILE
February last year, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded hit Chile. I`m driving to the village of Dichato, once a town attracting loads of tourists to its beaches. But the tsunami that followed the quake destroyed it all, only the foundations remain.
About 2,500 people still live in different camps in poorly isolated houses with few utilities. Although they were promised proper housing within a year, the new Chilean government seems to have forgotten about them.
Heriberto Lopez (66): `I woke up from the earthquake, everything was shaken, but my house remained intact. It was 3 a.m. so I decided to go back to bed. Then I heard this roaring sound, it was a tsunami, I realised. I ran outside and grabbed my neighbour and managed to hold on to the electricity cable up there on the pole. We survived, but she lost her daughter. There was no tsunami warning.`
