BORDERING 5300 KM / DAY 036 / APRIL 21, 2011 - 12:33 / AVAROA, BOLIVIA
A building appears in the horizon. The Chilean - Bolivian border. I am stamped through by the Chilean customs and enter a no mans land, Bolivian customs is five kilometres away. To my surprise it`s very busy, many people selling and buying fruits, vegetables, pirated DVDs and refrigerators. It`s the monthly Sunday market, where Chileans and Bolivians exchange their products.
When I arrive at Bolivian customs the door is closed, a small note on the door reads `We`ve gone to the market, find us there.` Back at the market I find the customs officer who quickly stamps my passport so he can go back to his business. I mention him that the gate at his border is closed. He explains how to reach the back road, so I can avoid the official crossing...
