THE START OF MY JOURNEY 1 KM / DAY 001 / MARCH 17, 2011 - 02:37 / PUERTO TORO, CHILE
The Chilean navy takes me for the last stretch from Puerto Williams to Puerto Toro. Only ten families live here, of which most are either army or police. Once a month a ferry serves the village, bringing food supplies and fuel for the generators.
Jose Catrin is the only fisherman living here, with his wife Sonia. He has been living in Puerto Toro for 40 years, now. They invite me for coffee in their basic house, and I instantly feel at home. Sonia loves Puerto Toro because it`s quiet, there are no cars, no noise. She has never been to Santiago and she doesn`t want to. Her father took her here in a rowing-boat in the 60s, five days of rowing!
