PERU`S FUTURE? 8500 KM / DAY 078 / JUNE 2, 2011 - 11:51 / TRUJILLO, PERU
I`m in Trujilo, a big city in northern Peru, and today the Peruvian presidential elections are being held. The country is hopelessly divided and I must say I find it very hard to believe that the daughter of former dictator Fujimori might become the new president. Keiko Fujimori has never denounced her father`s human rights abuses. In fact, it's expected that she will release him from jail as soon as she gets into office. Some people have short memories...
There is a lot of noise on the street - tonight Keiko Fujimori will speak. The square is orange, the color of her party Fuerza 2011. She appears with her new American husband. Unfortunately he doesn`t speak Spanish, but he waves to the crowd and tries to dance Peruvian style. Tonight Peru`s future for the coming years will be revealed.
