GOING BANANAS 9230 KM / DAY 084 / JUNE 8, 2011 - 12:00 / MACHALA, ECUADOR
I`m in Machala, a city in the south of Ecuador. My intention is to do a report on Peruvians working in the banana plantations. Who doesn't know Chiquita or Del Monte bananas? Well most of them are from Ecuador. I`m aware that the plantations are still sites of many problems - underpayment, bad and health labor conditions, to name a few. But this time, this isn`t my main interest. I just want to meet Peruvians who migrated here and tell their personal stories.
However this doesn't seem to happen. First all farmers` excuse is that all the Peruvian workers have gone to vote in Peru`s presidential elections, so no one's there. After two days I hear the same story and start to become suspicious. Finally, I`m able to speak to one Peruvian man, his boss has allowed him to speak to me for 20 minutes. The poor guy seems to be scared to death and is hardly able to speak. After ten minutes I give up and wish him well.
I decide to leave the bananas - and I won't eat them in the near future either. For the next few days, I will work on Peruvians working on the rice farms here in Ecuador. You can't always get what you want... Hmm, didn't someone write a song about that?
