ON A DISAPPEARING ISLAND 11490 KM / DAY 131 / JULY 25, 2011 - 02:59 / CARTI, PANAMA
I made it! A boat came to Ustupo where I was stranded, and took me to Carti, a group of four islands in the north of the Kuna Yala district. Although the hundreds of mostly uninhabited islands look like they come straight out of a travel brochure, the Carti islands are densely populated and heavily polluted, not in the last place because of the new road connecting Panama City and the Pan-American Highway with the Caribbean coast.
This is the land of the Kuna, who are autonomous in this district. But... the sea level is rising and the islands of Kuna Yala are in danger.
My first night I stay with a family. Though it's very romantic in my hammock, it is so freaking hot that the next day I decide to look for a breezier place in town. Looking out over the ocean I see appealing white beaches with coconut palms in the distance, but Carti will be my home for the week to come while I work on my story about the Kuna and the disappearing islands.
