RISING HIGH 11565 KM / DAY 136 / JULY 30, 2011 - 10:54 / PANAMA CITY, PANAMA
Wow, what a shock to arrive in Panama City after all the wilderness. It`s known as the Miami of the south and rightly so - this is what you call a skyline! If it`s nice, is another question. To me it looks like hardcore capitalism - no city planning, no pedestrian sidewalks and even the old part, the `Casco Viejo` is under threat because the government wants to build a ring road there to serve the thousands of SUVs in the city.
I am here to do a story on one of the oldest Chinese communities in Latin America. But it`s a tough nut to crack. The community is large, but very dispersed across the city. The old Chinatown (in the foreground of the image) is falling apart. Recent immigrants, who came to Panama in the 80s, are reluctant to talk. It`s all about status, so if you work in a mini-supermarket and live in the warehouse that`s not the image people want to share.
