13 MURDERS A DAY 13543 KM / DAY 230 / NOVEMBER 1, 2011 - 09:25 / SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR
I arrived in El Salvador to find streets lined with McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy`s. El Salvador is the smallest country of the continent and also the most violent one in the world with an average of thirteen murders a day. I am puzzled by how this country can be so violent and Nicaragua so peaceful, they both have similar recent histories of civil war and dictatorships.
I learned that one reason is that in 1992 the US deported many Salvadorian gang members from its prisons back to El Salvador. Although there was hardly any gang culture here in the 80s, today neighborhoods and prisons are dominated by `MS` (Mara Salvatrucha) and `18` gangs.
I want to do a story about the Americanized culture and the violence that is a part of it, including the prisons, which won`t be easy in the limited time that I have.
