COMING AND GOING 15009 KM / DAY 247 / NOVEMBER 18, 2011 - 11:30 / TECUN UMAN, GUATAMALA
In Guatemala, my focus is on the mass deportations of immigrants from the US to Mexico, and from Mexico overland to Guatemala. Every year about 60,000 Guatemalans are deported back to their own country!
In my project I always try to give people a face, a name and a platform to tell their story. But waiting for a flight of deportees coming in from Houston at the Guatemala City airport, it`s difficult to speak to people. They`re nervous and desperate to get out. They have been in migrant detention centers in the US before being deported, so although they are back where many don`t want to be, they`ve regained their freedom. Not the moment where they feel like talking to a Dutch photojournalist for a while...
So I decide to move up to the border with Mexico, which is marked by the Suchiate River. I think I left my luck behind somewhere: the day I arrive, the ferrymen who steer the rafts which are used to cross the river are on strike. The rafts are used by people to do business on both sides and by migrants on their way north. Upriver I find some migrants taking the risk to wade through the river.
