THE SHADOW OF THE WALL 19456 KM / DAY 266 / DECEMBER 7, 2011 - 11:13 / DOUGLAS, USA
I finally made it to the USA border. I arrived in the centre of Nogales in Northern Mexico. It feels like I am in a small cowboy town, but it`s quite a big city otherwise. I stay in a hotel close to the border, from my window I can see the Burger King: US Nogales.
An eight metre high steel barrier separates the two towns. Until last August it was a steel wall, but now you can peek through the thick bars into the neighbouring country. Apparently, it was replaced because the US border patrol was frustrated that they couldn`t see what was happening on the other side. Now the wall seems more friendly, but it`s bigger and obviously still impenetrable.
Tonight I have to cross over to Tucson because I am meeting the `shadow wolves` the following day. They are a group formed by ICE (Immigration and Custom Enforcement) who patrol the Tohona reservation, a well-known corridor for migrants and marijuana slipping into the US. But first the Dutch public television does a piece on me. Afterwards we have dinner at the Applebee`s, there`s Monday football and it`s karaoke night. After having spent nine months in Latin America it`s a culture shock.
