CITY OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES? 20566 KM / DAY 322 / FEBRUARY 1, 2012 - 02:26 / LOS ANGELES, USA
The trip to Los Angeles is beautiful, The Doors on classic FM add extra flavor to the cactuses in the desert. It's incredible how empty parts of the US are, something which suddenly changes when I come closer to the megapolis of Los Angeles. I`ve rented a car for this bit, to be able to stop if I want to. And after the buses in Latin America, the Greyhound looks like something from the 4th world. I`m glad I installed a GPS on my phone: it's easy to miss an exit on a six-lane highway, especially when you are on the far left lane.
In LA I hope to find the families that migrated here from El Salvador and whose relatives I met in San Salvador. I`ve followed the `trail` of the migrant since El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico and hope to see what happens to the lucky ones that do make it to LA.
The Caracen Day Center is next to a big Home Depot where many day laborers gather, waiting for work. The center supports the workers when they have a conflict with their employer and makes sure they get paid 10 dollars an hour and not less. But since 2008 the situation is pretty miserable. There is little work and often payment does sink below 10 dollars. It`s so bad that many workers can`t even pay their own rent, let alone send money back to their family. In the weekends the churches often come out to give food to everyone.
