KEBAB AND MC DONALDS 20316 KM / DAY 306 / JANUARY 16, 2012 - 09:45 / SAN DIEGO, USA
My next story will be on an Iraqi community. In El Cajon, half an hour from San Diego, about 50,000 Iraqi refugees live. I`m curious to know how they are managing, what is their status and how they feel to live in a country that many saw as their occupiers?
I install myself in the Days Inn motel. Nothing wrong with the room, but the hard part for me being in the US, is that so often everything looks exactly the same. If I look out of the window, I see the Denny`s, McDonalds, a gas station. I could be in Houston, Seattle, Miami or San Diego. However, when I go outside and get to Main Street, this completely changes. Most signs are in Arabic and the supermarkets sell kebab, humus, olives and Turkish coffee. According to the people here, Main Street will soon be renamed Baghdad Street.
