EVEN MORE NORTH 27601 KM / DAY 357 / MARCH 7, 2012 - 10:19 / HELMERICKS, NEAR COLVIN RIVER DELTA, ALASKA
I thought that Deadhorse would be my end point, but then I discovered a few days ago that there was a family living on the Arctic coast, in the delta of the Colvin River. Bud Helmercks came to the Arctic coast from Colorado in the 1940s and decided to stay and become a bush pilot.
When I arrive I`m greeted by Bud's son Jim Helmericks (67), in a landscape that looks frozen in time. His wife Teena is not there, she's working in the oil fields.
I think I`ve found my last migrant family and probably the most northerly one. The counterparts of the first family I met in Puerto Toro, at the start of my journey in Chile one year ago.
